Historic Charleston: Nathaniel Russell House Museum

Charleston, SC, USA

The Nathanial Russell House Museum is a beautiful historic house in Charleston, South Carolina. It was built by a wealthy merchant, Nathanial Russell in the early 1800s. To no ones surprise, it is one of America's most significant neoclassical homes.

Upon entering, your eyes are immediately drawn to the marvelous cantilevered spiral staircase that ascends to the third floor. I am obsessed with spiral staircases and lavish mansions filled with rich history. I love getting to step into the past and learn about the gracious lifestyle of the elite. I couldn't contain myself as we toured the home. Living in a home like this one would be a dream come true. As we walked up stairs, we were greeted by this stunning pink oval room. The intricate detail of the molding was absolutely beautiful. One interesting piece of information our tour guide said to us was that at four years old, girls would already know how to sew and play an instrument.

One thing every home had in the bedroom was a chamber pot. However, it's difficult to tell considering they're hidden under regular-looking sofa chairs. Mosquito netting were a common thing back in the day to prevent insects from biting throughout the night.

  1. Wow, this home is a piece of art and wonder. The pictures are really nice but it will be good if you could show us glimpses taken from a bit distance to cover every room in full like you did for the exterior. Thanks for sharing.
